Changes to my approach to the ball
This week I made a minor change to my approach to the ball. This change was my steps to the side. I normally take 2 full steps around 1 yard each. With this change I shortened them to about 2 feet. I am not sure why this helped me so much but this week alone I was able to kick a 55 yard field goal with ease. My reasoning behind this is modeling my steps closer to the class of 2020 number 1 ranked kicker whose steps always looked very smooth and had the best ball contact of any high school kicker I have ever seen. One of my main problems from week 2 was my ball contact. I hit an x ball which is the result of making contact with the ball high up on your foot (near your ankle). Our First Game (season updates) Our first game was against Ragsdale. During warm ups I was able to hit field goals from 54 yard on a live hold and snap. Last year I was maxing out my field goals at 45 yards; this is a ten yard difference. For kickers this difference is shocking and surreal for me. One of my side goals for this year is becoming the starting kicker. I am the backup for the senior starter which is very frustrating. Next year when I am starting I hope to break records including average punt distance, longest field goal, most accurate kicker in Davie history, highest touchback &. Next week's goals Next week I plan to get some better video out of me kicking and really breaking down my form. I ordered a tripod for better video and just got my license which will help with the amount of times and I can work out and kick. Next week I plan to work on my kickoffs as well. They have gotten progressively worse ever since I started to focus on punting and field goals.

Progress
For my project I made sure that I had a good plan so I can get results. This week I kicked 3 days for around 2 hours each of the days. I made some progress with my ball contact; this is key to having a long field goal consistently. Each day this week I one step field goals to break what I was doing down mechanically and focus on my contact and swing. I tried one field goal with a full swing and was able to hit from 51 yards pretty consistently. The only problem I had this week was an X ball. It means I am hitting too far on my ankle and making the ball go through the air looking like an X. Problems This week I only ran into a couple problems that are easy fixes. The main problem going forward is the sloppy ball contact. If I can fix my ball contact I can get an extra 2 or 3 yards on the kick. With my routine of kicking 4 times a week it can injure you, The only issue I have had with injuries is a sore hamstring but this is very minor and easily avoidable if I stretch better. Final Thoughts Overall I would say this week was very successful. I had very few minor problems that I can fix easily. Next week I will use it as a benchmark to show where I am at right now and the progress that will be made. The only thing that I wish I could have redone was only kicking 3 times this week instead of hitting my normal marks of 4 practices. Another goal and plan for next week is to fix my ball contact. This shouldn’t be very difficult. I just need to adjust my plant food and my striking spot on the ball. |
